Essential support for widows and orphans: issues and actions in Kisangani, DRC

Kisangani, July 2, 2024 – The issue of widows and orphans in Kisangani, capital of the Tshopo province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has recently raised legitimate concerns. Indeed, during a ceremony organized on the sidelines of International Widows’ Day, clear requests were made in favor of a solid legal framework and easier access to credit for these vulnerable people.

The Union of Queens of the World (Urvem) advocated for a specific law bringing together all the rights recognized for widows, in order to guarantee their protection and autonomy. It was highlighted that these women often find themselves marginalized in society, particularly if they did not have children during their marriage. An unfair stigma that places them in a situation of vulnerability and insecurity.

Dorothée Ifee Boloko, provincial president of Urvem, insisted on the need for rigorous legislation sanctioning any violation of the rights of widows and orphans. In a context marked by socio-political unrest and inter-community conflicts, it is essential to put in place concrete measures to support these people in distress.

The “Monet Issa Masudi” foundation is committed to supporting Urvem in its actions in favor of widows and orphans. By offering education, training and entrepreneurship opportunities, it wishes to contribute to improving the quality of life of these people and their social integration. This is a laudable gesture that highlights the importance of solidarity and mutual aid in a society facing many challenges.

The celebration of International Widows’ Day, although postponed for organizational reasons, made it possible to raise public awareness of the precarious situation of these often forgotten women. It is essential to recognize their contribution to society and offer them the means to take control of their destiny, so that they can provide for themselves and their children.

Ultimately, the issue of widows and orphans should not be relegated to the background. It requires sustained attention from the authorities and society as a whole. By guaranteeing access to credit, medical care and adequate legal assistance, it is possible to offer a more serene future to these vulnerable people, and to build a more just and supportive society for all.
