Fatshimetrie, June 29, 2024 – A tragedy struck the Kabare Territory, located in the South Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a traffic accident causing the loss of 12 lives and injuring five people. The incident took place on National Road number 5, near the location known as ‘Toyota’, on the border between the Mumosho and Mudusa groups.

According to information relayed by the administrative source, the accident involved a public transport minibus heading towards Luhwinja in Mwenga territory. The vehicle ended its journey in a wooded area near the village of Kasheke, and speeding was identified as the main cause of this tragedy on a recently rehabilitated section of road.

Among the victims of this terrible accident was Mr. Ngwasi, Luhwinja station chief and former prefect of the Nyantende institute. Local authorities confirmed that six bodies were transported to the Panzi hospital morgue, three to the Bukavu provincial hospital and three others to Nyantende hospital.

Dr. Jean-Paul Karumba, head doctor of the area at Nyantende hospital, reported ten injured admitted to the health establishment, among whom three unfortunately died, including a two-year-old child, a man of around fifty years and a wife. The survivors of this tragedy are currently being cared for and closely monitored.

The civil society of the Mudusa groupement expressed its deep compassion towards the families of the victims and launched an urgent appeal for caution to drivers using this road under construction. This request for vigilance aims to avoid new tragedies and ensure the safety of users.

This dramatic traffic accident once again reminds us of the importance of respecting road safety rules and being vigilant on the roads, particularly during rehabilitation work. The loss of these lives is a tragedy that could have been avoided, and it is crucial that all stakeholders involved in the management of the road network work together to prevent such disasters in the future.
