The results of the legislative elections which took place in Madagascar in June 2024 have finally been revealed. A narrow victory for President Andry Rajoelina and his party who obtained an absolute majority with only two seats in advance. For their part, the opposition finds itself with 22 seats to defend its ideas within the National Assembly. However, it is towards the 51 independent deputies that all eyes are now turning, the latter being likely to tip the scales to one side or the other.
The reaction following these results was not long in coming. Augustin Andriamananoro, former Minister of Culture and close to President Rajoelina, sees in this victory a recognition of the Malagasy people and their democratic will. According to him, having an absolute majority is essential to carry out effective and coherent policy at the state level. The main issue now lies in the formation of the government, a crucial step which will determine the country’s next political orientations.
However, the battle does not end there. Independents, key players in this election, are particularly courted by both camps. Some are already joining the presidential majority, while others are heading towards the opposition.
