Resumption of deadly fighting in the Kanyabayonga region

Fatshimetrie: Resumption of fighting around Kanyabayonga

The Kanyabayonga region in Congo is currently the scene of intense fighting between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and the M23 rebel group. The situation is critical, with violent clashes reported in several surrounding villages, endangering the lives of civilians and exacerbating tensions already present in the region.

Information from local civil society indicates that the fighting began on the morning of Thursday June 27, with bombings carried out by M23 fighters. Bombs were dropped on the Kavumba plantation, located 135 kilometers from the rural commune of Kirumba, killing one person and injuring two others. These acts of violence have sowed terror among the local population, already weakened by years of persistent conflict.

The clashes then moved to the village of Miriki, near Kanyabayonga, where the armed forces are confronted by the M23, supported by Wazalendo fighters. The situation remains tense, particularly with the fighting continuing towards the village of Lai-Lai, neighboring Kimaka, a few kilometers south of Miriki. Civilians are trapped in this uncontrolled violence, and local authorities are trying to contain the situation to protect vulnerable populations.

Colonel Alain Kiwewa, administrator of the Lubero territory, confirmed that M23 bombs fell near the village of Miriki, although fortunately no deaths were reported. However, tension remains palpable, with clashes also reported at the Lai-Lai Bridge, thrown over the Luholu River near Lusogha, in Rutshuru territory. This spiral of violence led to massive population displacements, with Miriki residents taking refuge in Luofu to escape the fighting.

This critical situation calls upon the international community to take urgent action to put an end to this violence and protect innocent civilians caught in the middle of the clashes. It is imperative that diplomatic and humanitarian solutions be found to guarantee the security and stability of the Kanyabayonga region, in order to avoid an escalation of the conflict and to preserve the lives of local populations.

In conclusion, the resumption of fighting around Kanyabayonga is a stark reminder of the persistent challenges facing the Democratic Republic of Congo. There is an urgent need to find lasting solutions to end this violence and work towards lasting peace in the region. Innocent people should not pay the price of armed conflict, and it is our duty to do everything to preserve their safety and dignity.
