Mental health awareness: Breaking the silence to prevent tragedies

Fatshimetrie, June 28, 2024. The village of Rubumba, located in the Walungu territory of South Kivu, was the scene of a tragic event recently. A young man of about 25 years old, Grâce Migambi, decided to end his life, leaving behind a poignant letter revealing the reasons for his desperate act.

In his farewell communication, the deceased expressed a deep feeling of loneliness and abandonment. He confided to his loved ones that he felt socially useless and neglected, a suffering that led him to make the irreversible decision to hang himself. This poignant story highlights the distress of an individual in emotional distress, unable to find the support he needed in his entourage.

Faced with this tragedy, local civil society, represented by the president of the new Congolese civil society core of Kamanyola, Mr. Bisimwa Birindwa, reacted with dismay. It highlights the need to break the silence around mental health issues and promote open communication to prevent such desperate acts. Rather than battling your inner demons alone, it is crucial to raise awareness about the importance of dialogue and expressing your needs to those around you.

Local authorities have committed to conducting thorough investigations to understand the circumstances of Grâce Migambi’s suicide. Preventive measures will also be put in place to prevent such tragedies from happening again in the Kamanyola community.

This sad event highlights the fragility of mental health and the need to provide adequate support to people in emotional distress. It highlights the importance of breaking the taboo surrounding mental health issues and promoting a culture of kindness and listening within communities. By opening dialogue and providing a space for people in pain to speak, we can help prevent such tragedies and provide essential support to those who need it.
