At the front of the fight against sexual violence in the DRC: The courageous visit of the German Federal Commission to Panzi hospital

Fatshimetry, June 27, 2024 – A delegation from Germany’s Federal Commission for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs visited Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, to assess the responsibility for victims of sexual violence. Federal Commissioner for Human Rights and Human Affairs, Louise Amtsberg, led the visit to inspect the different treatment modalities offered to victims, including medical, psychological and legal care.

Louise Amtsberg expressed her gratitude to the hospital staff for their dedication and commitment to patients. She praised the work of Dr Denis Mukwege and pledged Germany’s continued support for victims of sexual violence. Stressing the importance of preventing sexual and gender-based violence, she called on the Congolese authorities to strengthen protection and awareness measures.

This visit highlights the importance of international solidarity in the fight against violence against women. The commitment of the German Federal Commission demonstrates the need to support victims and promote justice and rehabilitation.
