Home Economy Access to electricity in East Africa: Towards an ambitious energy transformation

Fatshimetrie, June 27, 2024 – Access to electricity in East Africa is a major issue for the economic and social development of the region. During the recent inauguration of Ms. Sylvie Olela Odimba as President of the Association of East African Energy Regulators (AREA), emphasis was placed on the importance of making effective this access to electricity in communities in the region.

Ms Odimba’s vision to develop a large electricity market in East Africa is ambitious but necessary. By fostering cooperation among AREA member countries, it is possible to create an enabling environment for the growth of the energy sector in the region.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Electricity Sector Regulatory Authority (ARE) is actively working to liberalize the sector, thus allowing the arrival of operators to produce, distribute, import and export electricity. This opening of the market contributes to improving the energy supply and promoting energy efficiency.

It is crucial that the Congolese population demonstrate patience in this transition process. The changes needed to improve access to electricity may take time, but it is essential to respect standards and good practices in the use of electricity.

Furthermore, during the 16th annual meeting of the AREA, important resolutions were adopted, notably the financial plan for the 2024-2025 financial year. This plan aims to mobilize the necessary resources to support energy sector development initiatives in East Africa.

Additionally, the Tanzania Electricity Regulation Specialist Training School will play a vital role in training regulators in the region. Implementing modern training will help build the capacity of energy sector stakeholders and ensure high quality standards.

In conclusion, access to electricity in East Africa is a primary objective to ensure sustainable and inclusive development in the region. The initiatives and collaborations put in place by AREA and its members demonstrate the common commitment to address this crucial challenge and promote universal access to electricity.

This new chapter in the history of energy in East Africa paves the way for significant progress and positive transformation for the people of the region.
