Urgent call for transparency in the hydrocarbon sector in the DRC

Fatshimetrie, Goma, June 26, 2024 – A pressing call for careful analysis of the call for tenders in the hydrocarbon sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo was launched during a poignant press conference held in Goma, in the North Kivu province of the DRC.

Serge Kambale, director emeritus of the renowned civil society organization “Congo Nouveau”, underlined the urgency of this analysis by highlighting the risks faced by the country. He warned of the danger of going into further debt instead of generating colossal revenue for the well-being of the Congolese nation.

According to him, it is imperative to react to a tender process which seems to lack transparency and rigor, thus risking depriving the Congolese population of the beneficial effects of hydrocarbon resources. He called for collective action to challenge the awarding of contracts to some unscrupulous companies.

Mr. Kambale further expressed the ardent wish to see the perpetrators of corrupt practices in this process held accountable before justice, emphasizing the importance of the integrity and responsibility of state actors.

At the heart of their demands is the demand for total transparency, symbolized by the publication of the minutes of the councils of ministers which awarded the oil and gas blocks, as well as the need for updating of geological data for judicious exploitation. and equitable resources.

The activity, placed under the evocative theme of “Risk of debts rather than revenues”, took place in the commune of Goma, North Kivu. “Congo Nouveau”, a non-profit association anchored in Congolese civil society, affirmed its unwavering commitment to citizen participation, peaceful coexistence, economic prosperity and environmental preservation.
