Road citizenship in Mbuji-Mayi: together for a responsible urban environment

Fatshimetrie, June 26, 2024 – The question of road citizenship is at the heart of the concerns of the inhabitants of Mbuji-Mayi, capital of Kasaï Oriental in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Roads and Drainage Office (OVD) recently launched an appeal to the population to promote respect for new infrastructure and preserve their longevity.

Trésor Kashala, provincial director of the OVD, underlined the importance of the involvement of all actors in society, from young people to political parties including churches and associations, in the preservation of these works. He warned of the risk of seeing these infrastructures deteriorate prematurely due to the lack of civic-mindedness of certain citizens.

Germain Lumbala, communications manager at the OVD/Kasaï Oriental, insisted on the need for the inhabitants of Mbuji-Mayi to adopt responsible behavior, such as maintaining the cleanliness of the works, avoiding throwing waste in the gutters or on sidewalks, and use these infrastructures appropriately. He stressed that preserving the urban environment is everyone’s business and that everyone must play an active role in this regard.

Furthermore, Mr. Lumbala recalled the importance of respecting road traffic rules, particularly with regard to the use of roads and sidewalks. He insisted that sidewalks are intended exclusively for pedestrians and should not be used as parking for vehicles. Drivers must be vigilant and respectful of infrastructure and other road users.

In short, road citizenship is a major issue for the city of Mbuji-Mayi. It is essential that everyone becomes aware of their individual responsibility in preserving urban infrastructure and respecting traffic rules. Together, the people of Mbuji-Mayi can help create a safer, cleaner and more pleasant environment for everyone. ACP/KKP
