Layi’s insightful look at the Nigerian economy: between humor and reality

During his recent visit to London, the famous Nigerian comedian, Layi, appeared as a guest on the very last episode of the show “Fatshimetrie” where he shared in depth his journey, his transition from stand -up towards the creation of sketches, as well as his experience in boarding school. Among the many topics discussed, Nigeria’s economy sparked deep thoughts from the artist, who described it as “crazy.”

Speaking on the economic situation in Nigeria, Layi said: “The economic situation in Nigeria is crazy, the exchange rate is crazy. The government is really old, I won’t say the president, but the government in general is old .”

Despite this, Layi highlighted the joyful nature of the Nigerian people, saying that is what motivates him in his work of bringing joy to people through his sketches. He shared his observation that depressing news in the media can make people feel sad, and that his fans sometimes ask him to post sketches to take their minds off things. He also noted the recent modification of the national anthem, expressing surprise at the timing of this decision given the current context.

Layi highlighted the difficulties faced by Nigerians, especially due to the inability to meet basic needs due to the low minimum wage. He explained: “Since the recent increase in the dollar, it has become difficult because the minimum wage has not been increased, and the NLC has been protesting for the government to raise it. Many people cannot afford to buying basic necessities, which was already difficult before, is even more difficult today.”

The comic also addressed the phenomenon of mass emigration of Nigerians, commonly known as ‘Japa’, stressing that Nigeria’s situation is pushing people to leave. He highlighted the challenges faced by those trying to settle elsewhere due to strict laws in host countries. He pleaded for raising awareness on the reality of the situation in Nigeria.

In conclusion, Layi delivered an authentic and poignant testimony on the economic and social reality of Nigeria, highlighting the challenges faced by the population and the need for general awareness.
