The Fishermen of Tourism Avenue in Ngaliema: Call for Innovation and Government Support

Fatshimetrie, June 24, 2024 – The fishermen of the tourism avenue, affectionately nicknamed “Nzela ya mayi”, in the commune of Ngaliema in Kinshasa, have expressed their needs for equipment adapted for their activity. During a field visit, these workers highlighted their crucial lack of modern means to practice their profession.

Isaac Natondo, one of the fishermen interviewed, appealed to the government to provide the profession with innovative means such as modern boats. He pointed out that working with hand-woven nets limits their ability to cover large fish-bearing areas, leading to frequent returns empty-handed. This request, legitimate and essential for the development of their activity, highlights unequal treatment compared to other sectors benefiting from greater attention from the authorities.

In addition to practicality, fishermen point to the economic importance of their profession, emphasizing the vital role they play in supplying fresh produce to riverside restaurants and drinking establishments. These establishments take advantage of the richness of the Congo River to attract a clientele fond of local products and an authentic atmosphere.

During the dry season, the river transforms into a popular tourist site for its sunsets and picturesque landscapes. Iconic places like Tintin, Mbudi Nature and Jerico offer unique panoramas, attracting visitors looking for moments of relaxation and contemplation.

However, despite its undeniable tourist potential, the Kinsuka fishing district faces major challenges. Flooding during the rainy season and the lack of public lighting on the tourism avenue constitute obstacles to the safety of residents and visitors. These issues must be taken into account to guarantee the sustainability of the tourism sector and the well-being of local residents.

As a jewel in the heart of Africa, Kinshasa offers exceptional places for discovery and relaxation, like the fisherman’s bay of Kinsuka. This picturesque enclave, located near the presidential residence of Mont Ngaliema, embodies the diversity and cultural richness of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Expatriates and local residents alike find it a haven of peace and escape, offering a breathtaking view of the majestic Congo River.

In conclusion, the situation of fishermen on the avenue du tourisme in Ngaliema symbolizes both the challenges and the opportunities facing the fishing sector in Kinshasa. By investing in modern equipment and improving local infrastructure, the government could help boost this essential economic activity and enhance the region’s tourism potential.
