Renewal of provincial governance in the DRC: the new governors ready to take on the challenges

Kinshasa, June 24, 2024 – President Félix Tshisekedi recently issued clear directives to the new governors of the provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo. During a meeting at the African Union City, the President hoped to see proactive governors, engaged on the ground and resolutely focused on the population.

Jacques Kyabula, governor of Haut-Katanga and spokesperson for the governors, underlined the importance of this orientation by declaring: “The President of the Republic wants governors in line with his vision, executives on the ground and not confined to desks.” He also added that the governors would implement these instructions by approaching the populations to offer concrete solutions to societal challenges.

The presence of the newly elected governors alongside the Head of State marks a turning point in the dynamics of provincial governance. These officials, who came to present their courtesy and receive direct guidance from the President, represent a new lease of life for the provinces of Kinshasa, Kwango, Haut-Katanga, Kasaï-Oriental, Kongo Central, Kasaï, Mongala, Lualaba, Haut-Lomami, Lomami and Tshuapa.

The importance of communication and proximity with the population was underlined during this meeting. Governors were also made aware of the need to strengthen border security, promote local development and avoid oversizing staff in their respective cabinets.

This approach is part of the governance vision of the Head of State for his second term, thus marking a strong commitment to a more efficient provincial administration that is closer to its citizens.

In conclusion, this meeting between the President and the new governors offers promising prospects for the future of the Congolese provinces.
