The Crucial Issues of the Removal of Monarchs in Nigeria

In a climate of tension and persistent controversy, Professor Isiaq Akintola, Executive Director of MURIC (Muslim Rights Concern), raised legitimate concerns in a statement made on Monday, June 24. All eyes are on the recent impeachment of several monarchs in Kano State, orchestrated by the Governor, Alhaji Ganduje.

This sequence of deposed people includes 15 traditional chiefs, dismissed for various reasons. However, MURIC is now concerned about a possible dismissal of the Sultan of Sokoto, considered the spiritual leader of all Muslims in Nigeria.

Professor Akintola thus warns the Governor, stressing that any attempt to dethrone the Sultan would be vigorously rejected by the Muslim community. The position of Sultan goes beyond the traditional framework to also take on a religious dimension. In his capacity as President General of the NSCIA (Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs), the Sultan has spiritual authority extended to the entire country.

Evoking the precedent of the dismissal of Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki by Colonel Yakubu Muazu in 1996, Professor Akintola underlines the fragility of the legitimacy of traditional leaders in Nigeria. He warns of the consequences of a possible questioning of the Sultan’s authority, likely to provoke a radical reaction from Nigerian Muslims.

Faced with the situation, Senator Shehu Sani calls for caution, stressing that the Sultan of Sokoto enjoys respectability and influence which go far beyond the borders of Sokoto State. He warns against any attempt to replicate recent events in the Kano Emirate within the Sokoto Sultanate.

This rise in tensions and speculation highlights the political and religious issues Nigeria is currently facing. The question of the legitimacy and authority of traditional leaders is of crucial importance, impacting both the political stability and social cohesion of the country. It is essential that authorities act prudently and responsibly to preserve unity and peace within the Nigerian nation.

This case highlights the complex challenges Nigeria faces, mixing traditions, religions and politics. It also highlights the importance of preserving the historical and cultural institutions that structure Nigerian society, while ensuring respect for the rights and freedoms of all its citizens.

The current situation calls for constructive dialogue and concerted action to avoid any escalation and preserve the harmony and diversity that are the richness of Nigerian society.
