According to a recent announcement by the Senegalese government, a price reduction for some essential products such as rice, bread and oil will come into effect on June 24, 2024. This measure, long awaited by the population, aims to address the rising cost of living that weighs on many households in Senegal.
This decision is not a first in the country. Indeed, a price reduction had already been implemented in November 2022 under the former presidency of Macky Sall. However, this initiative had been marred by a lack of follow-up in the application of the measures, leading to a rapid return of prices to the rise after the first controls.
Momar Ndao, President of the Consumer Association, expressed his point of view on this new price reduction. According to him, to guarantee its effectiveness and avoid the pitfalls of previous attempts, it is imperative that the control be permanent and extensive. He emphasizes that it is essential that all competent forces be involved to monitor the proper application of these new measures. He particularly recalls that political announcements of price reductions must be followed by concrete actions on the ground so that prices remain affordable for consumers.
To ensure the success of this price reduction, Momar Ndao proposes to involve more personnel dedicated to price control, by recruiting consumer volunteers and mobilizing other forces such as the police, the gendarmerie and the national hygiene service. According to him, broader coordination and rigorous monitoring are essential to keep prices at an affordable level for all citizens.
The new administration of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who recently took office, therefore has the difficult task of ensuring that this announced price reduction is effectively implemented and respected in the long term. The latter, elected with the promise of fighting against the high cost of living in Senegal, will have to demonstrate his ability to keep this commitment to improve the living conditions of Senegalese citizens.
In conclusion, it is crucial that the Senegalese authorities implement continuous monitoring and effective coordination to ensure that prices are maintained at levels accessible to all. This reduction in the prices of everyday consumer products must be supported by concrete actions and regular monitoring in order to improve the daily lives of residents and combat the high cost of living in Senegal.
