Constant monitoring of the Nyiragongo volcano despite the strike: Protection and transparency at the heart of priorities

Fatshimetrie, June 23, 2024 – A monitoring commission for the famous Nyiragongo volcano was set up at the Goma Volcanological Observatory during a dry strike, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This decision, taken by the management committee and the union delegation, aims to ensure constant monitoring of volcanic activity despite the current strike situation.

Made up of heads of departments, researchers, technicians and drivers, this commission is responsible for collecting and analyzing data on the Nyiragongo volcano in order to prevent any possible risk for the population. It should be noted that the strike by Observatory employees was not called off, which underlines the desire of this commission to fulfill its monitoring mission despite the circumstances.

In an official press release, the Goma Volcanological Observatory stressed the importance of its role in the security and well-being of the local population. Any act of communication on the activity of the Nyiragongo volcano, without an official mandate from the OVG, is strongly discouraged, in order to avoid any unnecessary confusion or panic among residents.

The observation of a glow at the summit of Nyiragongo on Friday June 21, followed by rumors on social networks, led to a certain state of panic among the population. This incident highlights the need for constant and transparent monitoring of volcanic activity, to ensure everyone’s safety.

In conclusion, the establishment of this monitoring commission demonstrates the commitment of the Goma Volcanological Observatory to fulfill its mission of protecting and informing the public in the face of natural risks. It is essential that the authorities and the local population work closely together to prevent any potential danger and ensure the safety of all in the face of the constant threat posed by the Nyiragongo volcano.
