Resurgence of tensions in the West Bank: shocking incident involving the Israeli army sparks outrage

Fatshimetrie — Tensions persist in the West Bank following an incident involving the Israeli army and an injured Palestinian. A shocking video has circulated showing a man lying on the hood of an Israeli military vehicle as he was transported through a Jenin neighborhood. The scene sparked outrage and raised questions about respect for human rights and military ethical standards.

According to information from the Palestinian Red Cross (PRC), medical teams were prevented by Israeli forces from providing first aid to the injured man in the Jabarat area of Jenin. The latter was then attached to the military vehicle before being taken into custody and then transferred to hospital. His identity and state of health remain unknown.

In response to the incident, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged that their actions were contrary to standard orders and procedures and announced an investigation. In a statement, the Israeli military said that the behavior of the forces involved did not correspond to the values of the IDF and that action would be taken accordingly.

According to the IDF, the incident took place during anti-terrorism operations aimed at apprehending suspects in the Wadi Burqin area west of Jenin. The man attached to the military vehicle was reportedly injured and captured after an exchange of fire, before eventually being handed over to the Red Cross for medical treatment.

This episode comes against a backdrop of rising violence in the West Bank since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza last October. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 500 Palestinians, including more than 100 children, have lost their lives in the West Bank since October 7. Nearly three-quarters of these deaths were caused during operations carried out by Israeli forces, according to the UN agency.

In parallel with Israeli military raids in the West Bank, we are observing an increase in violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers against Palestinians. More than 700,000 Jewish settlers reside in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in settlements considered illegal under international law, constituting one of the main obstacles to a two-state solution.

The Biden administration’s recent use of sanctions against the Israeli group Tzav 9, accused of disrupting humanitarian convoys to Gaza, demonstrates international efforts to contain violence in the West Bank. This new episode highlights the need for concerted action to preserve peace and promote respect for human rights in the region.
