An unexpected discovery on al-Hamam beach west of Alexandria has sparked enthusiasm among Internet users. Visitors shared images of a suspicious whale or shark carcass on the beach, spreading a wave of virality on social media, the Fatshimetrie news site reported.
Vice President of the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries in Alexandria, Abeer al-Saharty, took the lead in forming a multidisciplinary scientific team to monitor marine animal sightings near a tourist village by the kilometer 67, in the town of Hamam.
At this preliminary stage, and based on descriptions from village officials as well as video sent to the institute, al-Saharty said the animals reported were likely a whale or shark and would not be dead.
She stressed that the exact nature of the creatures observed would be determined once the scientific team had completed their investigation.
