Save TRANSCO: the urgent appeal of the inter-union in the DRC

The union representative of the TRANSCO company in the Democratic Republic of Congo recently publicly expressed its concerns about the difficulties encountered by the public transport establishment. In a poignant statement to the press, the vice-president of the inter-union, Jean Mulunda, underlined the urgency of providing rapid and effective solutions to the various problems which hinder the proper functioning of the company.

Among the main concerns raised are the shortage of fuel and lubricant subsidies, the suspension of the balancing subsidy since 2016, as well as the numerous unpaid debts of users. This precarious situation directly impacts the modest salaries of TRANSCO workers, thus exacerbating tensions within the company.

The urgent call from the inter-union for the holding of a tripartite Government-TRANSCO-unions reveals the urgency of finding lasting solutions to turn around the transport company in difficulty. It is essential to conduct an in-depth analysis of the real obstacles hindering the growth and development of TRANSCO, beyond administrative, technical and social problems.

TRANSCO’s current situation, characterized by dependence on meager local revenues and official pricing set at 500 Congolese francs per ticket, highlights the need for urgent government intervention to guarantee the sustainability of the company. With a workforce of more than three thousand agents and executives, TRANSCO represents an essential pillar of the transport sector in the DRC, and its survival is crucial for the national economy.

It is therefore imperative that the authorities quickly take concrete measures to support TRANSCO in its mission of providing a quality public service to the Congolese population. By mobilizing the necessary resources and engaging in constructive dialogue with the stakeholders concerned, it is possible to give new impetus to this essential institution for the development of the country.

In conclusion, TRANSCO’s critical situation calls for urgent and coordinated action from the Government, unions and company management. Only a common commitment to the recovery of TRANSCO will make it possible to overcome the current challenges and guarantee a prosperous future for this emblematic transport company in the DRC.
