Oil exploration permit in a national park: the environmental controversy in Congo-Brazzaville

In a world where environmental protection has become a major concern, every action that harms nature arouses strong indignation. This is the case of the oil exploration permit granted to a Chinese company in the Conkouati-Douli national park in Congo-Brazzaville, a decision which has sparked strong protests among environmental defenders and local activists.

This exploration permit, issued despite national legislation and international agreements on forest preservation, represents a direct threat to the region’s biodiversity. NGOs such as Earth Insight and Greenpeace Africa are sounding the alarm, denouncing a scandalous environmental regression. Stella Tchoukep, from Greenpeace Africa, highlights the disastrous consequences of this initiative, both ecologically and socially.

The fragility of tropical ecosystems, endangered species such as the lowland gorilla, as well as local communities dependent on these natural resources, find themselves compromised by this oil agreement. The need to protect these natural resources to combat climate change and preserve biological diversity is highlighted.

Beyond environmental issues, it is also a question of economic and political vision that arises. The balance between economic development and respect for the environment must be at the heart of the decisions taken by the authorities. The transition to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly economy is crucial to ensuring a viable future for future generations.

Faced with this alarming situation, the Congolese authorities are called upon to take strong measures, to be exemplary in the protection of their natural heritage and to inspire other countries in the Congo Basin to follow this path. Dialogue between political actors, civil society organizations and local communities is essential to find sustainable solutions and preserve the natural wealth of this region.

Ultimately, the preservation of tropical forests and their biodiversity is a major issue for the future of our planet. Each of us, as global citizens, has a role to play in protecting our environment and promoting sustainable and equitable development for all.
