Genetic disease screening campaign in Egypt: Towards a healthy generation

The Ministry of Health and Population in Egypt recently announced the positive results of the genetic disease screening campaign in infants launched as part of the presidential initiative “100 Million Healthy Lives”. This initiative aims to build a healthy generation without disabilities, thereby emphasizing the prevention and early detection of genetic diseases in newborns.

Health Minister Khaled Abdul Ghafar revealed that 454,879 babies have been screened so far, aiming to detect 19 genetic diseases among premature babies in hospital nurseries affiliated with the ministry. This first phase of the campaign consists of the detection of diseases such as congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, phenylketonuria, among others.

The second phase of this initiative involves screening newborns in all nurseries of university hospitals, private clinics and health units across the country. The results of these tests are analyzed at the Egyptian Center for Disease Control, ensuring adequate monitoring and early treatment of infants identified as carriers of genetic diseases.

Meanwhile, the ministry also reported that more than 13.6 million citizens were examined as part of the presidential initiative to screen and treat chronic diseases, as well as early detection of kidney diseases. This approach covers a wide range of pathologies, with particular attention paid to chronic diseases in people over 40 and young adults suffering from pre-existing health problems.

By mobilizing 3,601 primary care units nationwide, this initiative aims to provide quality health services and personalized monitoring to guarantee the well-being of the population. Indeed, prevention and early detection remain essential pillars to ensure adequate disease management, improve the quality of life of patients and reduce the burden on health systems.

Thus, these efforts supported by the Egyptian government illustrate a strong commitment to public health and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle for all citizens. By investing in prevention and implementing effective screening programs, Egypt demonstrates its desire to establish a robust and inclusive health system, focused on the well-being and sustainability of future generations.
