Fiery debate in Benin: The Episcopal Conference calls for a consensual revision of the electoral code

In the current political context in Benin, a heated debate has been relaunched following the changes to the electoral code made on March 15. This controversy, strongly criticized by the opposition and civil society, was recently the subject of a public declaration from the Episcopal Conference of Benin.

In an official press release issued in Cotonou, the Beninese clergy underlines the lack of transparency and consultation during recent amendments to electoral legislation. The modifications made to the electoral code, particularly with regard to sponsorships for presidential candidates and the threshold of votes required to claim a deputy seat, raise concerns about fairness and democratic representativeness.

Faced with these concerns, the Episcopal Conference of Benin calls on the government and the National Assembly to initiate a consensual rereading of the electoral code. This approach aims to promote transparent, inclusive and democratic elections, in the best interest of the Nation. The clergy emphasizes the importance of dialogue and reconciliation as essential factors to guarantee social peace and the well-being of all citizens.

This position taken by the Beninese clergy takes place in a context where several political and civil society actors are also calling for a reassessment of the electoral code. The desire to guarantee fair and representative elections seems to be at the heart of the demands of various stakeholders in the country.

While awaiting the reaction of government authorities, the appeal of the Beninese clergy resonates as an invitation to reflection and action to strengthen the democratic foundations of Benin and promote a true culture of dialogue and consensus in the electoral process.
