The transition to renewable energies in Africa: challenges and promising prospects

The emergence of a transition to renewable energy is undoubtedly a major issue of our time. This evolution, vital for the preservation of our planet, however, involves complex challenges, particularly with regard to the strategic mineral resources needed to produce wind turbines, electric batteries and solar panels.

According to experts, this transition to renewable energy could quadruple the demand for these essential minerals. Africa is a key region in this quest, as it is where the majority of these critical mineral resources are located.

In this perspective, it is crucial to consider a just and inclusive energy transition. It is in this context that Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, co-chair of the Global Council for Responsible Transition Minerals, provides valuable insight.

During a recent meeting, Dr. Yumkella stressed the importance of industrialization and competitiveness as major long-term objectives to ensure the economic prosperity of African countries. He advocates investments in energy, rail and port infrastructure to improve the living conditions of local populations.

Furthermore, the Co-President of the Council stresses the need for good governance and responsible industrialization to sustainably exploit mineral resources for sustained economic growth. He emphasizes the importance of fair treatment of workers and strict enforcement of regulations to improve working conditions in mines.

Regarding access to electricity in Africa, questions arise about the balance between industrialization and the transition to more environmentally friendly energy sources. Dr. Yumkella advocates a mixed approach, capitalizing on the continent’s natural resources to provide affordable and sustainable energy.

For him, the future of Africa rests in part on improved governance and the emancipation of youth to demand positive change. He is convinced that optimizing an energy mix adapted to the specificities of each region will ensure a reliable, affordable and environmentally friendly energy supply, thus promoting the socio-economic development of the continent.

Ultimately, the vision carried by Dr. Kandeh Yumkella invites us to envisage a future where Africa, thanks to its rich diversity of natural resources, can play a leading role in the global transition to renewable energies, subject to enlightened and ethical management of these precious resources.
