Protection of children in zones of armed conflict: a call for action and solidarity

The protection of children in zones of armed conflict is a crucial issue which requires the involvement of all actors involved in the resolution of armed conflicts and the promotion of human rights. MONUSCO, through its section dedicated to child protection, recently organized an important awareness campaign in Beni, in the province of North Kivu, to sensitize community leaders, political-administrative, military and police authorities on the need to protect and promote the rights of children living in zones of armed conflict.

This initiative, carried out in collaboration with local organizations such as the Child Protection Task Force and the Disarmament, Demobilization and Community Reintegration Program, comes at a crucial time, on Children’s Day. African child celebrated every year on June 16. The aim is to highlight the challenges children face in areas of armed conflict, such as kidnappings and forced recruitment by armed groups.

During this awareness-raising, Alex Kighoma, president of the GTPE in Beni, underlined the importance of everyone’s involvement in the protection of children’s rights. He recalled that children constitute tomorrow’s future and must be at the heart of everyone’s concerns. In times of conflict, children are among the most vulnerable and it is crucial to ensure that they are protected and heard.

The return of peace to a region like Beni is essential to guarantee respect for children’s rights and ensure their safety. The president of the Beni children’s committee stressed that peace and a protective environment are essential conditions to allow children to flourish and grow in a safe and favorable environment for their development.

In conclusion, the awareness-raising carried out by MONUSCO and its partners in Beni underlines the crucial importance of child protection in zones of armed conflict. Children must be at the center of everyone’s concerns and their well-being must be a top priority. By working together to promote peace and keep children safe, we can contribute to a better future for future generations.
