Persistent insecurity in eastern Biakato: Living under the threat of ADF rebels

Fatshimetrie: Persistent insecurity in eastern Biakato, an obstacle to the daily life of residents

In the eastern region of Biakato, more precisely in Ngelia, a new tragedy has darkened the already trying daily life of the inhabitants. After being captured, Kahindo Jeannette, a courageous and determined woman, was found lifeless, marking a new act of violence perpetrated by ADF rebels. This macabre discovery comes only days after a deadly ambush that cost the lives of several innocent farmers.

Rams Malikidogo, human rights defender, aptly expresses the anguish that now reigns in this part of the region: “Life has become a real challenge for the inhabitants of Eastern Biakato. The constant threat from Ugandan rebels makes every movement, every daily task, perilous.” Indeed, the armed presence of the ADF for several weeks has only accentuated the distress of local populations, even preventing them from accessing their fields, thus endangering their food security and their livelihood.

This chronic insecurity, far from dissipating, seems to be anchored in the reality of the region’s inhabitants. Stories of deadly ambushes and kidnappings sow terror and further reduce the freedoms of local populations every day. Freddy Upar, based in Bunia, thus underlines the urgency of effective intervention to stem this spiral of violence which is plaguing eastern Biakato.

Faced with this climate of terror and instability, it is imperative that the competent authorities take concrete measures to ensure the security of residents and put an end to the abuses of armed groups. Peace and stability are essential conditions for the development and well-being of local communities, who legitimately aspire to live in security and flourish in their daily lives.

In short, the persistent insecurity in eastern Biakato constitutes a real obstacle to the smooth running of daily life for residents. It is urgent that concrete actions be taken to restore peace and serenity in this region devastated by violence. Innocent lives must no longer be sacrificed on the altar of barbarism, but protected and respected in their integrity and dignity.
