In Fatshimetrie, a district of Lagos, residents deplore the harmful consequences of the insufficient drainage system in the face of frequent rainfall. When it rains, the streets turn into rivers, creating chaos and anxiety among residents and road users.
One of the residents, Mr. Kikachukwu Chukwuji, shared his dismay that the area was regularly flooded during heavy rains. This flooding affects all residents of the region, making travel particularly difficult during the rainy season. To get around, they are forced to buy rubber boots to get around, because the local drainage infrastructure is not adequate.
The consequences of these floods go beyond disruptions to road traffic. Some vehicles break down due to standing water, causing delays and additional costs for public transport users. Residents are forced to face these difficulties on a daily basis and call on the authorities to find lasting solutions to this recurring problem.
Another resident, Mr. Abdulrasheed Dauda, stresses the importance of immediate action by the authorities to address the flooding affecting the area. It highlights the problem of waste dumping into drainage systems, causing blockages and preventing the natural flow of water. He insists on the need to put in place awareness-raising and repressive measures against those who pollute drainage infrastructure.
In Alhaji Idowu community in Akowonjo, Mr Ismail Muftau attributes the flooding to canals clogged with waste. This situation hinders the flow of water during rains and negatively impacts residents and businesses who cannot access their homes and shops. He calls on the government to help them unblock drainage systems and guarantee better water circulation.
In LASU-Isheri, residents also have their share of flood-related challenges. Temitope Ajayi points out that stagnant water poses a risk of disease spread, leaving the community vulnerable to mosquitoes and infections. Ayodeji Atanda reports that certain sections of the road are constantly flooded, worsening the living conditions of residents and threatening their health.
The situation in Fatshimetrie is representative of the challenges many communities in Lagos face due to inadequate drainage infrastructure. It is imperative for the authorities to take concrete measures to resolve this recurring problem, thereby ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens.
