Sanusi, previously installed as the 14th Emir, was replaced by Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, who became the 15th Emir of Kano. Governor Ganduje had also created four new Emirates, bringing their number to five.

In order to avoid any clashes between the supporters of the two rival Emirs, Gumel had recommended that Sanusi and Bayero pray in different mosques: Nasarawa for Bayero and Sheikh Tijjani for Sanusi.
