Kalemie’s fatal accident: a call for road safety

A terrible traffic accident devastated the town of Kalemie, in the province of Tanganyika, last Friday evening. According to consistent reports, a Great Lakes Cement (GLC) company truck was involved in a tragic accident at the Lubuye Bridge. The provisional report shows 12 people dead and several others injured following this tragedy.

According to witnesses present at the scene, the Oho truck, coming from the Kabimba village and loaded with bags of cement, swerved due to a technical failure caused by excessive speed. The scene was described as gruesome, with passengers perched on top and on either side of the vehicle’s body.

Provincial MP Donat On’Owale, dismayed by the extent of the damage caused by this accident, visited the site to see the damage and express his compassion for the victims and their families. The consequences of this incident are both physical and material, leaving a heavy toll on the local community.

The victims, both the deceased and the injured, were transported to the Kalemie general referral hospital to receive first aid and be taken care of by the health authorities. Local authorities have also been alerted to take the necessary measures in the face of this road tragedy.

This painful event reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of respecting road safety rules. It also highlights the need for relevant authorities to strengthen vehicle surveillance and apply preventive measures to avoid such tragedies in the future.
