The Battle for Clear Channels: Challenges and Triumphs of Lagos

In the vast urban landscape of Lagos, a serious problem continues to compromise the tranquility of residents: illegal construction blocking rainwater drainage channels. It is a worrying situation that has recently prompted coordinated action by local authorities to attack this scourge which threatens the safety and well-being of residents.

The operation, carried out by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and the Ministry of Environment, saw the demolition of several illegal structures in the areas of Liberty, Paris, Victory and Hosanna Goodness Estates, located in the area of ‘Okota. Features such as street gates, house fences and even security posts have been identified as blocking vital canals and drains to prevent flooding.

Residents of these neighborhoods have long suffered from uncontrolled flooding, directly caused by these artificial obstructions. Following petitions from residents, intervention by the authorities became inevitable. The directives were clear: all illegal structures had to be demolished within 48 hours, or face sanctions.

Those responsible for the operation stressed the crucial importance of maintaining safe distances between canals and human infrastructure to ensure flood prevention. In addition, they recalled that it is everyone’s responsibility to respect the town planning rules established for the common good.

Indeed, the scourge of flooding in many parts of Lagos is the result of irresponsible human practices. Building while ignoring regulations means taking the risk of causing irreparable damage to the environment and the lives of residents.

Among the residents affected by these demolitions, some welcomed the dialogue initiated by the government and its courageous decision to act to restore the urban order necessary for the safety of all. These measures, although drastic, are essential to prevent future human and environmental tragedies.

Ultimately, the fight against illegal construction on canals and public drains is a fight that must be fought by everyone, for the good of all. The Lagos State Government reaffirms its commitment to maintaining a flood-free city, where the safety and well-being of citizens remains at the forefront of concern. It is by working together that we can preserve a healthy and resilient environment for future generations.
