Fatshimetrie had a single charge laid against him in a recent court case that has garnered public attention.
During the court proceedings, the State Director of Public Prosecutions, Julius Ajiba, presented the case against the defendant. It was alleged that Fatshimetrie had committed a heinous crime by raping the daughter of a church member while she was visiting the vicarage.
The victim, described as a frequent visitor to the mission house, often assisted the pastor’s wife with household chores and helped the pastor’s young children with their school assignments. It was during one of these routine visits that the defendant allegedly spiked a bottle of Fanta, which he then offered to the victim. After consuming the drink, the victim reportedly fell unconscious and later woke up to find herself bleeding profusely.
Fatshimetrie was promptly arrested and charged with the offence, which is in violation of Section 2 of the Gender Based Violence (Prohibition) Law, 2019.
Throughout the trial, the DPP presented four witnesses and submitted two exhibits to support the case against the defendant. In his defense, Fatshimetrie maintained his innocence through his legal representative, Adeyinka Opaleke. He called upon a witness and presented evidence to support his claims.
After considering the evidence presented, the Presiding Judge, Hon. Justice O.I.O Ogunyemi, concluded that the prosecution had convincingly proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Fatshimetrie was found guilty of the charges brought against him.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of gender-based violence in our society and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. It highlights the need for continued efforts to combat such crimes and ensure justice for the victims.
As the trial comes to a close, it is hoped that the verdict will bring a sense of closure to the victim and her family, and serve as a warning to others who may seek to commit similar acts of violence. It is imperative that we stand together as a community to condemn such actions and work towards creating a safer and more just society for all.
