The economic renaissance of the Democratic Republic of Congo: challenges and opportunities for the Suminwa government

June 11, 2024 will remain engraved in the political history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the inauguration of the Suminwa government by the National Assembly. That day, the Prime Minister presented an ambitious government program, structured around 6 areas of development, including 3 major areas in the economic sector. This step marks the start of a new era for the country, marked by challenges but also by opportunities for progress and transformation.

At the same time, the economic world is coming to life with the opening of the 37th annual Credaf conference in Brazzaville, bringing together the leaders of tax administrations. The DRC is represented by the General Directorate of Taxes, thus demonstrating its commitment to taxation and good governance. This event strengthens international cooperation and the exchange of good practices, essential for stimulating economic growth and ensuring the sustainability of public finances.

In a completely different register, the 19th edition of the DRC mining week begins in Lubumbashi, in Haut Katanga, highlighting the country’s mining potential and investment opportunities in this strategic sector. The DRC’s natural resources constitute a real lever for development, provided that they are exploited in a responsible and sustainable manner, for the benefit of the entire population.

However, challenges persist, as evidenced by the difficulty of building in Kindu, in Maniema province. This situation highlights the obstacles faced by many players in the construction sector in the DRC, and underlines the need to strengthen infrastructure and skills to promote urban and economic development in all regions of the country.

Finally, the links between entrepreneurship and investment are explored by Professor Makala Nzengu, dean of the faculty of economics and management at the Bel campus Technological University. This reflection demonstrates the importance of innovation and investment in the creation of wealth and jobs in the DRC, by encouraging the emergence of new projects and new businesses, vectors of growth and prosperity.

In short, this day of June 11, 2024 illustrates the diversity and richness of the Congolese economic landscape, between challenges to be met and opportunities to be seized, in a context of transformation and permanent evolution. It is up to each actor, whether political, economic or academic, to contribute to building a better future for all, by implementing innovative and sustainable strategies, serving the development and well-being of the population.
