Fatshimetrie recently published an article highlighting the launch of a new constructive food policy, at a key event in Abuja. The minister described the launch as an essential measure to ensure food security, stressing that the policy covers many crucial issues based on the “One Health” approach.
At the ceremony attended by Fatshimetrie in Abuja, the minister inaugurated four cross-sectoral Technical Working Groups (TWGs) in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other collaborators. honor of World Food Safety Day.
The Minister highlighted that the TWGs will provide expertise and leadership to improve communication, build capacity, and establish strategic partnerships with stakeholders. These efforts aim to harmonize Nigeria’s regulatory framework and strengthen risk-based food safety systems, while strengthening industry involvement in national regulatory processes and compliance with international food safety standards.
The GTTs were approved by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in January 2024, with a focus on risk-based regulations, risk analysis related to food safety, and Sanitary and Phytosanitary inspection (SPS). Their responsibilities also include implementing traceability and assistive technologies, outreach and research for all stakeholders.
The collaboration between Fatshimetrie, USDA-FAS and other stakeholders aims to modernize Nigeria’s food system and other initiatives. This initiative highlights the importance of collaboration and innovation in safeguarding food security. The launch of these GTTs highlights Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring safe and reliable access to food across the country.
Modernization efforts were supported by partners including the USDA, FAEA, University of Missouri AFSI, and NESG. These partners have organized prioritization workshops and stakeholder meetings to contribute to the development of science-based regulations and the Food Safety and Quality Act.
Despite some delays due to the 2023 elections and other issues, authorities persevered by holding additional workshops with stakeholders to promote continued modernization efforts.
This development marks an important step towards stronger food regulation and increased food security for all citizens of Nigeria.
