For some time, the inhabitants of Goma, in North Kivu, have been confronted with a major environmental problem which continues to worsen: the increasing pollution of the waters of Lake Kivu. This vital source of water and fish, notably the Sambaza, is threatened by plastic waste and packaging that invades its waters. Environmental activists continue to sound the alarm about this worrying situation.

Lake Kivu, in addition to being an essential shipping route, is an indispensable resource for the local population. The inhabitants depend on its waters for their food and water supply. However, the growing presence of plastic waste and packaging not only pollutes the lake’s ecosystem but also exposes the population to major health risks.

Assumani Hamada, a researcher specializing in environmental issues, highlights the multiple challenges facing the city of Goma. Indeed, unsanitary conditions in certain markets, associated with the ashes of the Nyiragongo volcano, also constitute significant problems. Waste littering sidewalks and illegal dumping sites creates an unsanitary and unpleasant environment for residents and visitors to the city.

Furthermore, air pollution caused by the eruptions of the Nyiragongo volcano further aggravates the situation. Volcanic ash contaminates food and compromises the respiratory health of the local population, leading to public health risks.

Despite some sporadic attempts to combat Lake Kivu pollution, it is clear that concrete actions and increased support are needed to protect this vital ecosystem. Preserving the lake’s biodiversity and the health of Goma’s residents must be a top priority for local authorities and environmental activists.

In conclusion, the increasing pollution of the waters of Lake Kivu in Goma is a major challenge that requires an urgent and coordinated response. It is imperative to raise awareness, implement effective waste management measures and promote sustainable practices to preserve this natural gem for future generations.
