**Nigeria aims to improve its electricity distribution with the acquisition of 3.5 million electricity meters by 2024**
The West African country Nigeria recently announced an ambitious plan to strengthen its electricity distribution by acquiring up to 3.5 million new electricity meters by the end of 2024. The initiative , launched by the Ministry of Energy, marks an important step in the government’s efforts to improve electricity revenue collection in the country.
This decision echoes the commitment made by the Nigerian authorities to acquire more than 10 million meters over the next five years. A substantial investment of $946 million has been allocated to this initiative, demonstrating the importance that the government places on solving problems related to electricity distribution in the country.
Nigeria has been facing severe electricity shortages for several years, impacting the daily lives of citizens and hampering the country’s economic development. The government led by President Tinubu is committed to resolving this urgent and essential issue.
Nigerian consumers have expressed frustration over electricity payment issues, highlighting the lack of electricity meters in many homes. Of the country’s 13 million households, more than 7 million do not have an electricity meter, leading to difficulties in billing and collecting revenue for electricity suppliers.
Energy regulators received thousands of complaints from Nigerian households last year, accounting for almost 57% of the total complaints registered. This issue highlights the urgency of government action to improve electricity distribution in the country, guaranteeing equitable and reliable access to energy for all.
The government also affirmed its intention to acquire these meters both locally and internationally, demonstrating its willingness to act quickly and proactively to resolve the energy challenges facing Nigeria.
