Tensions and issues within the Sacred Union in the Democratic Republic of Congo

On June 5, 2024, the Democratic Republic of Congo was the scene of a crucial meeting of the presidium of the Sacred Union, the ruling coalition. This meeting, which comes just a week after the publication of the composition of the government, highlighted the persistent tensions and frustrations within the presidential majority itself.

At the heart of the debates is the question of the composition of the ministerial cabinet. The members of the Sacred Union openly expressed their concerns and suggestions during this meeting which lasted more than three hours. Several voices were raised to highlight major points of disagreement. Some political groups are calling into question compliance with the principles initially announced, in particular that according to which any political group bringing at least ten deputies should be granted at least one ministerial post. Criticisms have been made regarding the presence of certain individuals within the government, deemed not to conform to these principles.

Another criticism concerns geographic representativeness within government. Some members believe that all regions of the country should have been more represented, and denounce the under-representation of certain provinces such as Maniema. These questions raised during the meeting highlight the tensions and differences of opinion within the Sacred Union.

Some members go so far as to suggest a reshuffle of the government composition even before the inauguration by the National Assembly, arguing that the government risks encountering difficulties in obtaining this inauguration if current concerns persist. However, President Félix Tshisekedi’s entourage does not plan to revise the current list of ministers. The Head of State recently met the President of the National Assembly to discuss the investiture process, which is looming on the horizon and could be effective by June 11.

This meeting of the presidium of the Sacred Union reflects the current tensions and issues within the country. The ongoing discussions suggest possibilities for changes within the government, but also highlight the challenges it will face in obtaining approval from the National Assembly. The political future of the DRC still seems marked by uncertainty and the need to find a balance between the different forces present.
