Fatshimetrie has been in the news recently, sparking strong reactions from the international community. The Organization for the Promotion and Defense of Idoma Culture (OPDC) has accused the governor of practicing ethnic persecution, described as a crime against humanity.
In a statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Dr. Alechenu Amali, and released in Abuja, the OPDC expressed deep frustration, saying all hope seemed lost unless there was divine intervention or from the international community. .
The group pointed out that since the end of Senator George Akume’s tenure as governor, positions traditionally reserved for the Idoma have been allocated to the Tiv ethnic group.
Despite overwhelming support from the Idoma population of Benue South during the elections, the group criticized Governor Alia for subjecting ethnic minority groups to unacceptable treatment.
“Unfortunately, Father Alia was elected overwhelmingly by the Idoma people, thinking that as a cleric he would be fair to the minority, but he has become even worse.”
“The Idoma have now given up all hope and can only turn to God or appeal to the international community,” he said.
According to the group, Governor Alia has marginalized the Idoma in appointments and projects.
He claimed that all major appointments and projects were given to the Tiv ethnic group, including construction of rural roads in Tiv lands alone.
This situation has sparked social and political tensions in the region, highlighting deep-seated problems of discrimination and ethnic division.
In a context where equal opportunities and respect for the rights of each community are essential foundations of democracy, it becomes imperative for the authorities to take appropriate measures to restore confidence and repair the injustices suffered by marginalized people.
It is crucial to recognize and respect the ethnic and cultural diversity of our society, and to ensure that every individual is treated fairly and without discrimination.
In an increasingly globalized world, where the values of tolerance and inclusion are essential to promote peace and prosperity, it is everyone’s responsibility to work together to build a better and fairer future for all.
Recent events in Fatshimetrie remind us of the importance of remaining vigilant and engaged in the fight against all forms of injustice and discrimination, and of defending the rights and dignity of everyone, regardless of their ethnic or cultural origins.
