MONUSCO’s challenges facing rebels in eastern DRC

Recent clashes between MONUSCO peacekeepers and M23 rebels in the Kanyabayonga region, located in North Kivu, have once again highlighted the precarious situation that persists in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Indeed, peacekeeping forces had to intervene alongside the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) to counter attacks by rebel groups who are sowing terror among the local populations.

Lieutenant Colonel Kedagni Mensah, MONUSCO military spokesperson, highlighted the commitment of peacekeepers to protect civilians displaced by the conflict. The day and night patrols carried out by the MONUSCO Force aim to secure the areas affected by the clashes, while ensuring the necessary support to displaced people.

The recently launched “Cheng Gong” operation in the Ituri region aims to deter the activities of ADF rebels and other armed groups who continue to sow chaos and violence in the region. The Mamove-Samboke, Mbo-Masuku-Kudu-Kudu and Mandumbi axes constitute all areas where the presence of peacekeeping forces is essential to guarantee the security of local populations.

Faced with these persistent security challenges, the determination displayed by the MONUSCO Force to fulfill its mandate of protecting civilians is essential. It is imperative that the international community continues to support the efforts of peacekeepers and the Congolese authorities to restore peace and stability in the region. The joint operations carried out with the FARDC demonstrate the need for effective coordination between all parties involved to face the security challenges that hinder the development of eastern DRC.

In conclusion, the recent fighting between MONUSCO peacekeepers and M23 rebels in the Kanyabayonga region highlights the need for concerted action to put an end to the violence and protect civilian populations. The crucial role of peacekeeping forces in the region cannot be underestimated, and it is imperative to strengthen their support to promote a peaceful resolution of the conflicts tearing apart eastern DRC.
