Behind the scenes of the Congolese government of 2024: a composition under close surveillance

The recent announcement of the formation of the new Congolese Suminwa government has aroused immense interest among the Congolese population, both at home and abroad. This prolonged wait, marked by twists and turns and intense political negotiations, finally resulted in the presentation of a government team made up of 54 members.

The official announcement, broadcast live on Radiotélévision nationale congolaise (RTNC) in the early hours of the night, highlighted the issues and challenges that the Suminwa government will have to face. One of the major concerns raised was the size of this new executive, particularly with the presence of six Deputy Prime Ministers, calling into question the government’s budgetary management.

The diversity of profiles within this government was also highlighted, highlighting the participation of leaders of political parties and groups, as well as elected representatives of the people. This diversity raises questions about the neutrality and effectiveness of these members in their ministerial functions. However, the President’s spokesperson, Tina Salama, defended these choices by highlighting the expertise and skills of members of the government, regardless of their political affiliation.

A notable advance was also observed in terms of female representation, with the appointment of 18 women to the government, including a Prime Minister. This approach is part of a presidential desire to promote gender equality and encourage the participation of women in the highest authorities of the State. However, the performance of these women ministers will be judged on their ability to fully assume their responsibilities, regardless of their gender.

Concerning the expectations of President Félix Tshisekedi towards this new government, these focus on the implementation of his six commitments for his second term, focused on job creation, economic stability, citizen security, diversification of the economy, access to social services and the efficiency of public services. These ambitious goals will require effective coordination of all members of government.

Finally, President Tshisekedi’s recent European tour helped strengthen economic and security ties with the countries visited. This active diplomacy has also enabled significant progress in the settlement of regional conflicts, notably with Rwanda. The trust placed by President Tshisekedi in his European partners demonstrates his desire to find peaceful and lasting solutions to the region’s security challenges.

In short, the Congolese government of 2024 finds itself at a crucial crossroads in its history, with complex challenges to overcome and a demanding population awaiting concrete results. The success of this new government will depend on its ability to overcome obstacles, work collaboratively and respond effectively to the expectations of Congolese citizens.
