Nationwide union protest in Nigeria: Workers blockade strategic workplaces

Fatshimetrie, a national union protest gained momentum on Monday June 3 due to the blocking of the gates by two large buses, Vanguard reported.

In a letter dated June 1 and signed by the Acting General Secretary, Agugbue Ugochi Happiness, the Parliamentary Workers Union of Nigeria (PASAN) urged all its members to join the national strike.

The content of the message entitled “Mobilization for the unlimited national strike” stated: “Following the resolutions taken by the NLC/TUC on the above-mentioned subject, all affiliated members are called upon to mobilize their members to join the national strike starting from from June 3, 2024.

“All Presidents and Secretaries of all chapters of our union are therefore asked to mobilize our members for effective participation.”

Pulse had earlier reported that the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja was facing a similar situation with passengers no longer able to access the airport due to the blockade by strikers.

Due to the inability of the tripartite committee, set up by the Federal Government, to agree on a new minimum wage, organized labor unions, including the Nigeria Labor Congress and the Trade Union Congress, launched a national strike today, Monday June 3.

The rapid mobilization of workers, symbolized by the blockade of strategic workplaces such as the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, underlines the determination and massive support for just and equitable demands; the tone is set for serious dialogue and negotiations between authorities and unions in order to reach a resolution satisfactory to all parties involved.
