The fight against crime in Nigeria: Figures which illustrate the action of the police

An alarming number of cases of crime appear to be plaguing Nigeria, with a staggering number of suspects arrested by police for a variety of crimes. According to the Force’s Public Relations spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, at a recent press conference in Abuja, the figures speak for themselves: 4,826 suspects were apprehended for cases of armed robbery, 3,078 for kidnapping, 2,479 for rape, 1,243 for illegal possession of firearms, 3,523 for cult activities, 3,381 for murder, and 13,402 for other criminal offenses.

Beyond the arrests, police managed to rescue 1,750 kidnapping victims, recover 2,566 firearms, 19,510 rounds of ammunition and 1,475 vehicles/motorcycles nationwide over the period studied. Additionally, 29,152 criminal cases were prosecuted, with 17,679 cases completed and 11,576 pending. It should be noted that 51 cases are currently on appeal before the respective courts of appeal.

The operations of the Police Special Task Force also led to the arrest of 19 suspects for various criminal activities across the country. Firearms, ammunition and other equipment were seized, and suspects were apprehended in connection with cases of kidnapping and theft along the Abuja-Okene-Benin axis.

The determination and efficiency of law enforcement made it possible to put an end to the criminal activities of these individuals and to recover dangerous weapons. Police also busted the operations of two suspects experienced in calibration fraud, ending more than two decades of theft and deception.

These arrests demonstrate the authorities’ firm resolve to combat crime and ensure the safety of citizens. They highlight the security challenges society faces and the need for effective measures to combat the scourge of crime.
