Strengthening agricultural security in Enugu: The Agro-Rangers Squad in action

In a concerted effort to ensure the safety of farmers and farmlands in Enugu State, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-industrialization, Patrick Ubru, has announced the establishment of a special unit, the Agro-Rangers Squad, in collaboration with the Nigeria Civil Security and Defense Corps (NSCDC). This initiative aims to complement the efforts of other security agencies already on the ground to protect farmers, both large scale and small scale farmers, in the state.

According to Commissioner Ubru, the Agro-Rangers Squad, trained specifically to provide agricultural protection and equipped with cutting-edge technologies, will be responsible for monitoring and controlling all forms of insecurity faced by our farmers. These teams are deployed to major agricultural operations across the state, as well as processing centers and special agribusiness facilities.

Furthermore, the ministry is in talks with the Miyetti Allah group so that its members also participate in guaranteeing security for all. This collaboration aims to empower breeders and involve them in preventing conflicts between breeders and farmers.

Speaking on the frequent conflicts between farmers and herders in the Isi-Uzo region, the commissioner disclosed that the state government, in partnership with the federal government, had established a military base in the area. The measure aims to end unrest between farmers and herders as well as the use of unauthorized weapons in the region.

In terms of agriculture, Enugu State has invested significantly in the sector, particularly through agribusiness partnerships with donor agencies. The government is fully committed to ensuring the success of its agricultural transformation and achieving the expected results.

In an overall context, the government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, has not only invested heavily in security, but has also put in place discreet and visible security measures. These actions are intended to ensure the achievement of the State’s agricultural objectives, which encompass rural development, industrialization, food self-sufficiency, food security and job creation.

Thus, Enugu State stands firmly for prosperous, resilient and sustainable agriculture, supported by enhanced security and strategic partnerships with key players in the sector.
