**The fight against tuberculosis: a permanent challenge for the province of Tshopo**
Since 2022, the Tshopo province has faced a major challenge: the fight against tuberculosis. According to the latest data provided by the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Program (PNLT), nearly 6,974 cases were detected, unfortunately leading to 251 deaths. These figures, although worrying, underline the importance of awareness and early management of this infectious disease.
Dr Massou Owekelokato, provincial coordinator of the PNLT, recently communicated these statistics to the press, highlighting the urgency of action in the face of this public health problem. On the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day celebrated on March 24 each year, it is crucial to recall the importance of prevention, detection and treatment of this disease.
In the Tshopo province, tuberculosis treatment is fully covered, thus providing equitable access to care for the entire population. The 23 health zones of the province are mobilized to ensure the care of patients and the distribution of the necessary vaccines, particularly for newborns. This comprehensive approach, supported by central government, aims to reduce the burden of tuberculosis and protect the health of all.
It is essential to emphasize that tuberculosis remains one of the leading causes of death linked to infectious diseases in many developing countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, thanks to the concerted efforts of health authorities, healthcare professionals and local organizations, significant progress has been made in the fight against this disease.
Ultimately, the current tuberculosis situation in the Tshopo province calls for continued mobilization and strengthening of prevention and treatment actions. Raising public awareness, improving access to care and ensuring regular monitoring of patients are essential priorities to stem the spread of tuberculosis and save lives.
Together, let’s engage in this crucial fight for the health of all.
