In a poignant statement to the UN Security Council, Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative, expressed deep concern over the current situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. As fighting continues to ravage the region, putting the lives of thousands at risk, Fu Cong has called for an immediate end to hostilities.
The Chinese diplomat stressed the importance of dialogue to resolve differences and urged conflicting parties to exercise restraint. He also encouraged the DRC and Rwanda to renew their commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that it is essential to respect international agreements and not support armed groups.
Fu Cong also appealed to the international community to support regional efforts to maintain common security. He praised the role of regional countries in cooperation on defense and border management, stressing the importance of coordination among regional organizations to ensure stability.
Furthermore, the Chinese representative highlighted the need to promote economic and social development in the Great Lakes region, stressing that poverty and underdevelopment are factors contributing to the prolonged unrest. He called on the international community to support countries in the region in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, focusing on key areas such as poverty eradication, food security , education and employment.
