Strengthening economic ties between the DRC and France: a promising partnership

In the current economic landscape, relations between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and France occupy a special place. President Félix Tshisekedi’s two-day visit to France aroused great interest, particularly around the DRC-France business forum scheduled for April 30. At the heart of these exchanges, the economy plays a crucial role, with revealing figures on trade between the two countries.

According to data from the French Ministry of the Economy, the DRC ranks as France’s 107th trading partner. Exports of French products to the DRC saw a remarkable increase of 48%, reaching 220 million euros. On the other hand, imports from the DRC decreased, standing at 61 million euros, compared to 123 million in 2021, with a predominance of products from the mining sector.

The presence of French companies in the DRC is also a key element of this economic relationship. Around thirty French companies have established their footprint in the country. Among them, well-known names such as Orange, which has exceeded the billion-dollar investment milestone in the DRC, and the Accor group, operating renowned hotels such as Pullman and considering the opening of new establishments with Ibis and Novotel hotels in different Congolese cities.

The drinks sector is also well represented with the Castel group and its Bracongo and Brasimba breweries, leaders in the beers and soft drinks market. Furthermore, Perenco, present in oil exploitation with an average production of 25,000 barrels per day, and Total Energies, a major player in oil and energy distribution, contribute to the diversification of the Congolese economic landscape.

The objective of President Félix Tshisekedi’s official visit to France is to strengthen French investments in the DRC, by highlighting the country’s vast business potential, particularly in the mining, infrastructure and energy sectors. This move aims to further strengthen economic ties and stimulate the mutual development of the two countries.

Thus, this economic cooperation between the DRC and France demonstrates a dynamic partnership and encouraging prospects for the future, opening the way to new opportunities for investment and mutual growth.
