Fatshimetry of current events in Kibirizi, North Kivu: Tragic outcome following rebel attacks
Last week, the locality of Kibirizi, located in the territory of Rutshuru, North Kivu, witnessed devastating violence instigated by M23 rebels. This resulted in the loss of two civilian lives and left three others injured in the brutal attack. Additionally, a herd of goats and four houses were destroyed, further exacerbating the tragic impact on the local population.
Isaac Kibira, a prominent figure in the Bwito chiefdom, expressed deep concern over the situation and urged the government to take immediate action to safeguard the residents of Kibirizi. He described the chaotic aftermath of the M23 bombings, which forced a portion of the population to seek refuge in the bush out of fear of the ongoing conflict.
During the clashes, reinforcements were deployed from Kishishe to aid the M23 rebels, who strategically positioned themselves to defend against attacks by the Wazalendo fighters. The escalating tension poses a serious threat to the lives of civilians caught in the crossfire amidst this armed conflict.
Urgent measures are imperative to ensure the safety of Kibirizi’s population and quell the rising violence. The government must swiftly intervene to compel the M23 rebels to withdraw from the area, averting further loss of innocent lives.
In this critical time, unity and solidarity must prevail to shield vulnerable civilians and restore peace in North Kivu. All stakeholders must cooperate to halt the violence and strive towards a secure and peaceful future for the residents of Kibirizi and its environs.
