In April 2023, the small community of Akpawfu was ravaged by a tragic internal conflict, leading to a devastating loss of lives and destruction. The violence erupted following the formation of an armed vigilance group by a community leader, resulting in the destruction of over 15 homes and instilling fear and despair among the residents.
Contrary to rumors implicating nomadic herders, Chief James Ogbu, the elected Igwe, confirmed that the brutal killings were perpetrated by members of the Akpawfu community against each other. The funerals of the victims were somber occasions, highlighting the pain and sorrow that had befallen the once peaceful locality.
Despite the desolation and displacement caused by the clashes, a glimmer of hope shines through as the community slowly begins to rebuild and heal. During the funeral ceremony, Reverend Philip Arum honored the deceased as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for their community.
