On April 28, Félix Tshisekedi, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, embarked on an important mission to Berlin, Germany, accompanied by his wife, Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi. The purpose of this visit was to engage in strategic discussions centered around enhancing economic cooperation and bolstering security measures between the two nations. This initiative is a part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the DRC and Germany, with a focus on exploring new avenues for collaboration.
During his meeting with German Federal Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, President Tshisekedi delved into critical economic matters, emphasizing the necessity of attracting increased private investments into the Democratic Republic of Congo to stimulate economic growth. As a participant in the “Compact with Africa” initiative led by Germany, the DRC benefits from crucial support for implementing reforms that foster a conducive business environment, ultimately encouraging more private investments in the country.
In addition to economic discussions, the issue of security was also paramount in the talks between the Congolese and German delegations. The persistent conflict in eastern DRC, exacerbated by tensions with neighboring Rwanda, was a key focus. Safeguarding Congo’s territorial integrity was identified as a top priority, with Germany reaffirming its commitment to supporting mediation efforts spearheaded by Angola within the framework of the Luanda Peace Process.
Despite budgetary constraints, Germany remains dedicated to aiding the DRC. In 2023, over 200 million euros were allocated for the country’s development, with an additional 47 million euros earmarked for humanitarian assistance in eastern DRC. This steadfast support underscores Germany’s commitment to the stability and progress of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a global landscape rife with challenges, President Tshisekedi’s visit to Berlin holds significant importance. By fortifying relations between the DRC and Germany, this mission aligns with a cooperative spirit aimed at fostering economic prosperity, ensuring security, and enhancing the well-being of the Congolese people.
