Developing the mining potential of the DRC: Recommendations from a French expert.

Fatshimetrie, the renowned magazine for economic and mining news, recently disclosed the recommendations put forth by the distinguished French geologist, Hervé Theveniaut, at the closure of the mining conference during the French week in Kinshasa. An esteemed expert in the field, Theveniaut strongly advised the Congolese Government to establish an ambitious mining research program to enhance the understanding of the deposits within the territory. The untapped potential of these deposits is estimated to be between 5 to 20%.

The current mining operations are primarily based on discoveries dating back a century, lacking a comprehensive national research plan to unveil undiscovered deposits. The immediate necessity is to focus on uncovering these hidden treasures to ensure optimal development of the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Theveniaut also emphasized the importance of attracting more investors to finance the research and exploration of new deposits, thereby bolstering the Congolese mining industry.

At the conference, he highlighted the remarkable copper discoveries made in 2018, such as the Kamoa-Kakula and Makoko-Kiala complexes, which propelled the DRC to become the leading copper producer in Africa and potentially globally. However, despite these advances, several challenges persist, notably the energy deficit hindering the expansion of mining activities in the country. Many industry players resort to foreign electricity, particularly from Zambia, to compensate for this critical shortage.

In response to this situation, mining companies are urging commercial banks to release funds for investments in the energy sector to ensure a stable and sufficient supply. The 8th French Week in Kinshasa, which facilitated productive exchanges between French and Congolese companies, served as an avenue to raise awareness among economic stakeholders about the challenges and opportunities in the DRC’s mining sector.

By underscoring the importance of strategic mining research planning, enhanced attractiveness for investors, and resolving energy challenges, the DRC has the potential to fully capitalize on its mining resources and solidify its position as a leading player in the continental and global mining sector.
