United for the environment: A look back at the English Speaking Days for Nature, Biodiversity and Climate

The recent “English Speaking Days for Nature, Biodiversity, and Climate” event hosted by the Regional Postgraduate School of Integrated Forest Planning and Management and Tropical Territories (ERAIFT) was a significant milestone in the realm of environmental conservation and sustainable development. Held from April 17 to 18 at the Wallonie Center in Brussels in Kinshasa, the event aimed to convene diverse stakeholders to address current environmental challenges and showcase the linguistic diversity in ERAIFT’s training programs.

Celebrating ERAIFT’s 25th anniversary, the event attracted influential figures such as the UNESCO country representative in the DRC, scientists, representatives from Rawbank, journalists, members of civil society, Congolese administrative officials, and RADDI members both online and in person. This innovative initiative underscores ERAIFT’s commitment to expanding its reach to the English-speaking world and enhancing the education of future conservationists for protected areas and tropical forest ecosystems.

Noteworthy during the event was Rawbank’s pledge to contribute to global carbon neutrality by 2050. As the premier bank in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rawbank announced its financial support for carbon project developers, recognizing climate change as a pressing global issue. By promoting the carbon market, Rawbank aims to facilitate opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering sustainable development.

Since its incorporation into the United Nations Global Compact in 2017, Rawbank has taken concrete steps towards advancing the country’s sustainable development goals. The bank has placed a strong emphasis on environmental conservation to combat climate change, distinguishing itself as the first banking institution in the DRC actively engaged in this endeavor. Rawbank’s proactive stance reflects its commitment to exceeding traditional banking responsibilities and actively participating in preserving the environment.

In conclusion, the success of the English Speaking Days for Nature, Biodiversity, and Climate underscores the significance of collaboration and dedication in safeguarding our environment. ERAIFT’s forward-thinking initiative and Rawbank’s proactive engagement represent significant strides in the battle against climate change and the promotion of sustainable development for future generations.
