Fatshimetrie: Joel Embiid’s Incredible Performance Despite a Bell’s Palsy Diagnosis
Philadelphia 76ers’ center Joel Embiid showcased an outstanding performance in an NBA playoff game, breaking his personal best record despite being diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy.
Embiid disclosed that he has been battling the condition since Philadelphia’s victory over the Miami Heat on April 17. Bell’s Palsy is a type of facial paralysis that impacts the muscles on one side of the face.
Despite the challenges he is facing, Embiid, who was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2023, demonstrated his resilience by stating after Thursday’s game: “It’s been tough, but I don’t give up easily.”
He went on to mention, “I have endured migraines before and thought it was nothing. Normally, I prefer dealing with these issues alone, but this time I had to confide in someone.” Embiid emphasized that he refuses to use his condition as an excuse and is determined to keep moving forward.
In terms of his recovery, Embiid shared that there is uncertainty about when he will receive medical clearance. “There hasn’t been much improvement,” he said. “From the discussions I’ve had, it could take weeks or possibly months.”

Despite the pain he was experiencing, Embiid rose to the occasion and confidently declared that the 76ers would emerge victorious in the series against the New York Knicks. He scored an impressive 50 points, making 13 out of 19 shots and converting 19 of 21 free throws in the 125-114 triumph in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference first-round series.
The American-Cameroonian athlete maintained his composure throughout most of the game and displayed a dominant presence on both sides of the court.
During one instance in the game, he was called for a flagrant foul for pulling down Mitchell Robinson, resulting in Robinson sustaining a sprained left ankle and having to wear a brace.
“I never intended to harm anyone,” Embiid expressed. “In such situations, I must prioritize my own safety.”
Joel Embiid once again showcased his mental fortitude and determination to overcome hurdles, proving that he is more than just a basketball player. His exceptional performance on the court and his exemplary mindset make him a true inspiration for everyone, both in sports and on a personal level.
