Fatshimetrie: The Institutional Blockage that Paralyzes the DRC

The delayed installation of the final office of the National Assembly in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the 2023 general elections has raised concerns about the effectiveness and responsibility of political actors within the Sacred Union. According to Christian Mwando, president of the Opposition Parliamentary Group, individual interests are impeding the functioning of institutions and exacerbating existing challenges like insecurity and infrastructure deficiencies.

The prolonged process reflects a lack of awareness among certain political figures, creating uncertainty and stalling institutional operations. Mwando’s plea to the Head of State to uphold his duty as guardian of institutional functionality is valid, urging authorities to address the current impasse promptly and collaboratively to revitalize the democratic process in the DRC.

Criticism towards the delay, attributed to awaiting corrected lists of deputies by the Constitutional Court, casts doubts on the transparency and integrity of the electoral process. It is imperative for Congolese politicians to prioritize the common good over personal gains, meeting citizens’ expectations for governance and democratic institution’s respect.

The ongoing institutional deadlock in the DRC poses a significant challenge to its democratic future. Prompt and sustainable solutions are vital to break the stagnation and restore effective institutional operations in line with democratic principles.
